Repotted in R&U in January and have seen impressive root growth and these beautiful leaves. I’ve purchased multiple times and am slowly replanting all of my prized aroids in this mix!

My plants absolutely thrive in Rainbows and Unicorns! My monstera Albo is finally producing new leaves after switching her over to Rainbows and Unicorns! My Caramel Marble has taken off, too! I’m a chronic over waterer and this soil mix is so much more forgiving! It has all but eliminated my troubles with root rot! I recommend this substrate to all of my planty friends.

I’m fairly new to the hobby, and honestly, this mix is the only reason I’ve been able to grow some of the most difficult plants for my zone. Rainbows and Unicorns has made it incredibly easy to transition everything into my 3rd-floor apartment. I’ve moved my entire collection into this stuff! from high-stakes rare tropicals to basic pothos, and everything is absolutely thriving. As a customer, the value is in the versatility. I don't need five different bags of specialized soil taking up space; this one formula handles the high airflow my rare stuff needs while staying consistent enough for my easy-going plants. RPD really nailed the 'Aero' formula here. It’s a premium product that solves the #1 issue for indoor/outdoor growers: root health. It’s rare to find a 'boutique' mix that works this well across the board, making it a clear winner for anyone looking to invest in quality plant care. Major props for keeping my collection pushing out new leaves! 10 out of 10 in my book.

The Rainbows and Unicorns soil from Rare Plant Daddy is truly amazing. I’ve repotted all of my plants in this medium and have been extremely happy with the results. My plants look healthier and more vibrant, and my aglaonemas are even sprouting blossoms indoors, which is incredibly rare. Highly recommend this soil for anyone serious about their plants.

Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix

Best aroid potting mix for Monstera, Philodendron, Syngonium, Pothos, and tropical houseplants. Chunky structure designed for drainage, aeration, and strong root growth.

Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix is a premium chunky substrate engineered for aroids and tropical foliage plants that need fast drainage, consistent airflow around the roots, and reliable moisture control. Because root health starts in the pot, this blend is built to maintain structure longer, reduce compaction, and create a more forgiving watering routine for indoor growers.

Pack sizes: 1 Bag, 2 Bags, or 4 Bags (select above).

Side-by-side comparison of chunky aroid potting mix and regular potting soil showing drainage speed root aeration and compaction differences
Chunky aroid mix vs regular potting soil: faster drainage, improved aeration, and reduced compaction for healthier roots.

Best Uses for This Aroid Potting Mix

  • Aroids: Monstera, Philodendron, Syngonium, Pothos, Anthurium, Alocasia, and other aroid houseplants
  • Tropical houseplants: Aglaonema, Dracaena, Calathea, and similar tropical foliage plants
  • Ideal environments: bright windows, plant rooms, grow tents, and greenhouse-style setups

Why Aroids Thrive in a Chunky Potting Mix

Aroids require oxygen at the root zone. As a result, dense all-purpose potting soils often hold water too long and compact over time. In contrast, a chunky aroid potting mix improves airflow and allows excess water to exit faster. Therefore, roots stay healthier and more resilient, especially in indoor conditions where evaporation can slow down.

Additionally, a stable chunky structure helps reduce the wet/dry extremes that stress roots. For example, you can water thoroughly while still maintaining air pockets throughout the mix. Because of this balance, many growers find plant care becomes more consistent and predictable.

What’s Inside Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix

This blend combines chunky aeration components, moisture-balancing organics, mineral support, and microbial root-zone enhancers. In other words, it’s a tropical houseplant potting mix optimized specifically for aroids.

  • Chunky coco coir for structure and aeration
  • Coco pith for controlled moisture retention
  • Perlite to increase drainage and root oxygenation
  • Diatomaceous earth to support structure and silica contribution
  • Worm castings for gentle organic nutrition
  • Compost to support soil vitality and long-term structure
  • Rooting supplements to encourage strong root development
  • Azomite for broad-spectrum trace minerals
  • Premium fertilizer (6-2-4 NPK) for balanced growth support
  • Humic acids to improve nutrient availability and uptake efficiency
  • Microbial root enhancer to support root-zone biology

How to Use

  1. Choose a pot with drainage holes: Aroids perform best when excess water can drain freely.
  2. Position your plant: Set the root ball at the right height so the plant sits level in the pot.
  3. Backfill with mix: Add Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix around the roots and gently tap to settle. Do not compress tightly.
  4. Water thoroughly: Water until it drains out the bottom, then discard runoff.
  5. Dial in watering: Let the top portion dry slightly between waterings based on light, humidity, pot type, and root mass.

Pro tip: Because this mix drains fast, many growers water more confidently. However, you should still adjust frequency based on your environment and plant size.

  • Anyone looking for a tropical houseplant potting mix that holds structure and supports healthy roots

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this aroid potting mix good for Monstera?

Yes. Monstera roots benefit from a chunky mix that drains fast while maintaining airflow around the root system. This blend is designed for that root environment.

Can I use this for Philodendron?

Yes. Philodendron thrive in a well-aerated, fast-draining aroid potting mix that retains balanced moisture without compacting.

Is this a tropical houseplant potting mix or an aroid mix?

It’s both. It’s engineered as a best aroid potting mix first, and it performs extremely well for many tropical houseplants that prefer drainage and airflow.

Does a chunky mix help prevent root rot?

Chunky structure improves drainage and airflow. Therefore, it reduces the conditions that often contribute to root stress from overwatering. Your environment and watering habits still matter, but the mix is more forgiving than dense soil.

How much does one bag cover?

Coverage depends on pot size and how much root volume you’re filling. A 5-quart bag typically repots multiple small-to-medium houseplants or a few larger pots.

All of my plants explode in color, growth, and overall health. My strawberry shake has vibrant pinks, my alocasias corm like crazy. The soil allows for bottom watering without over saturation. Root growth explodes from this potting mix. One of the best things about this dirt is that when you water it gets way heavier and when you need to water the pots are super light and obvious.

The customer service is always amazing and is very responsive.

You really can’t go wrong! Give it a try you won’t regret it.

Thank you for the incredible review — we really appreciate you sharing such a detailed experience!

Plants like Alocasia, Philodendron, and Anthurium tend to respond extremely well to a chunky aroid potting mix because their roots naturally prefer a loose, breathable environment. The goal with Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix is to create a tropical houseplant soil that delivers strong root aeration while still maintaining stable moisture, which helps plants produce the kind of vibrant growth and coloration you’re seeing.

Your note about bottom watering and the weight difference in the pots is exactly how a well-structured fast-draining potting mix should behave. When the mix absorbs water it becomes noticeably heavier, and as the soil dries the pot becomes lighter, making it much easier to judge watering timing without risking oversaturation. That balance helps protect roots while encouraging aggressive root expansion.

It’s also fantastic to hear that your strawberry shake and alocasias are pushing strong growth and corm production. Healthy root systems are the foundation of those results, and that’s exactly what a breathable chunky soil mix for aroids is designed to support.

And thank you for the kind words about our customer service as well — we truly appreciate your support and love hearing that your plants are thriving. 🌿

Thank you so much for the amazing review! We love hearing that so many of your plants are thriving after switching to Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix.

Plants like Monstera, pothos, philodendron, and Hoya all benefit from a chunky tropical houseplant soil that allows strong root aeration and fast drainage. When the soil structure stays loose and breathable, roots get the oxygen they need to expand quickly, which often leads to the kind of growth improvements you’re seeing.

It’s especially great to hear that even a bulb that struggled for a year finally started growing after being planted in the mix. A fast-draining aroid potting mix helps prevent compaction around the root zone while still holding enough moisture for steady plant development.

We also designed the mix so it works well in different containers, whether plants are in ceramic pots or standard nursery pots, while maintaining a consistent chunky soil structure that supports healthy tropical plants.

Thank you again for the kind words and for trusting Rare Plant Daddy with your collection. We’re thrilled that the mix is helping your plants push out new growth! 🌿

Thank you for the awesome feedback — and for trusting Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix with so much of your collection!

Seeing growers move large portions of their plants into the mix and report aggressive root growth is exactly what we hoped to achieve when designing this chunky tropical houseplant soil. Plants like Monstera, Philodendron, Syngonium, and Anthurium all rely on strong root aeration and fast drainage to stay healthy, and a breathable aroid potting mix allows those roots to expand quickly without sitting in compacted soil.

Your note about the balance between drainage and moisture retention is especially important. A well-structured chunky soil mix should allow water to move through quickly while still leaving enough moisture around the root zone for steady growth. That balance helps prevent root rot while keeping plants consistently hydrated.

It’s also great to hear the mix is performing well in both self-watering containers and traditional nursery pots. A stable houseplant soil structure helps maintain airflow in different pot setups, which is a big part of why growers see such strong root systems.

We really appreciate the recommendation and love hearing that your plants are thriving. Thanks for being part of the Rare Plant Daddy community! 🌿

Thank you for the fantastic review! We’re thrilled to hear that your plants are thriving after switching to Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix.

One of the biggest advantages of a well-built chunky houseplant soil is the balance between fast drainage and strong root aeration. When plant roots have consistent airflow and aren’t sitting in compacted soil, they can grow faster and stay healthier — which often leads to the kind of vibrant growth and flowering you’re seeing with your Aglaonema.

Aglaonemas in particular respond very well to a breathable tropical plant substrate. Even though they’re not technically aroids in the same category as Monstera or Philodendron, they still benefit from a fast-draining potting mix that prevents root rot while maintaining stable moisture levels. That root environment is what helps plants focus energy on new growth and, in some cases, even indoor blooms.

It’s awesome to hear that you’ve moved your entire collection into the mix and are seeing such strong results. Thanks again for trusting Rare Plant Daddy with your plants and for sharing your experience with the community! 🌿

I don’t need five different bags of specialized soil taking up space; this one formula handles the high airflow my rare stuff needs while staying consistent enough for my easy-going plants. RPD really nailed the ‘Aero’ formula here. It’s a premium product that solves the #1 issue for indoor/outdoor growers: root health. It’s rare to find a ’boutique’ mix that works this well across the board, making it a clear winner for anyone looking to invest in quality plant care. Major props for keeping my collection pushing out new leaves! 10 out of 10 in my book.

Thank you for the incredible review — and congratulations on building such a thriving indoor collection!

One of the main goals behind Rainbows & Unicorns Aroid Potting Mix was creating a chunky tropical houseplant soil that works across a wide range of plants without forcing growers to keep multiple specialty mixes on hand. Aroids like Monstera, Anthurium, Alocasia, and Syngonium all benefit from a fast-draining potting mix with strong root aeration, but many growers also keep plants like pothos or Aglaonema that still perform well in a breathable substrate.

That’s exactly why this mix was designed with a chunky soil structure that promotes airflow around the roots while still holding enough moisture for healthy growth. When roots get oxygen and drainage at the same time, they expand aggressively — which is why growers often report the kind of root development you’re seeing.

It’s also great to hear that the mix is working across multiple pot types. Whether plants are grown in nursery pots, ceramic containers, or clear propagation cups, the goal of a high-quality aroid potting mix is always the same: maintain airflow, prevent compaction, and protect root health.

We appreciate you trusting our mix with your collection and are thrilled to hear it’s pushing out new growth. Thanks again for the support and for sharing your experience with the community! 🌿

Best potting soil by far. All my plants do amazing. Especially my high variegation plants. The leaves don’t brown out like normal. Don’t need to worry about feeding. Love it! Working on changing my whole collection to Rainbows and Unicorns.

    • Plant Daddy (store manager)

Thank you for the amazing review! Rainbows & Unicorns was designed as a chunky aroid potting mix that gives tropical houseplants the fast drainage and root aeration they need to stay healthy. Plants like Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Alocasia, and other aroids really benefit from the breathable soil structure because it prevents soggy roots and helps reduce leaf browning, especially on high-variegation plants. We’re excited to hear your plants are thriving and that you’re transitioning more of your houseplant collection over to Rainbows & Unicorns!

I love this soil. I purchased 4 bags and have all my anthurium and monstera’s planted in it. They are thriving and have very healthy roots. Love not having to add anything to it. I will be purchasing again.

    • Plant Daddy (store manager)

This is exactly how the mix is meant to be used.

Anthuriums and Monsteras both thrive in a well-structured, chunky substrate where airflow and drainage are consistent. Seeing healthy root systems across both is the strongest indicator the soil is doing its job.

Also glad you called out not needing to amend it — that’s a big part of the design. A complete aroid soil mix should work right out of the bag.

Appreciate you trusting it with your collection.

This soil was great to work with and my plants are LOVING it! They are so much happier in the Rainbows & Unicorns than in the commercial blends! Great product, I am a believer and won’t be going back to any other type of soil!

    • Plant Daddy (store manager)

Love hearing this — especially the comparison to commercial potting soil.

That difference usually comes down to structure. A chunky, aerated houseplant soil allows roots to breathe, which leads to better growth and overall plant health.

Even though snake plants aren’t classic aroids, they still benefit from a fast-draining mix that prevents excess moisture buildup.

Appreciate the support — and welcome to the “no going back” club.

I love this soil. I have never been able to keep a polly alive. I tried multiple times they always died. I put my polly in rainbow and unicorns soil. And she is not dead but she is thriving!!!! I have replace the soil in my monsteria with rainbows and unicorns soul and can not wait to see them thrive!!!! I will get all my 150 plants in rainbows and unicorns soil as they need repots. I am amazed at how well this soul takes care of my plants needs and causes the plant to blow up with growth and are healthy and happy great job with your soil. I love it!!!!

This is an awesome transformation — Alocasia Polly is a tough one for a lot of growers.

When plants repeatedly fail in dense soil and then stabilize in a chunky aroid mix, it’s almost always a drainage + oxygen issue at the root zone.

That shift to a breathable, fast-draining structure gives roots access to oxygen instead of sitting in moisture, which is what turns things around.

Going from losses to thriving plants is exactly what we want to see. Really appreciate you sharing this.

Rainbows and unicorns is my go to aroid mix that I use for 98 percent of my plants. Vigorous root growth and definitely helps, if not the reason the variegation is even better on all of my plants!!! Excellent drainage and aeration! Top notch aroid mix that I’ve came across!

    • Plant Daddy (store manager)

Appreciate this a lot, Kraig — especially coming from someone running it across nearly their entire collection.

Consistent root aeration and fast drainage are what allow aroids to push stronger growth and, in many cases, better variegation expression due to healthier overall plant function.

Using one reliable aroid potting mix across your plants also removes a lot of variables, which makes dialing in watering and care much easier.

Glad it’s delivering at that level for you.

This is such a solid example of how a fast-draining aroid soil mix should perform.

Monstera Albo and Caramel Marble are both extremely sensitive to overwatering, so when you see new growth and stability like that, it usually comes down to proper airflow and root oxygen.

A chunky soil structure that prevents compaction makes a huge difference, especially if you tend to water more frequently. That “forgiving” factor is exactly why growers switch away from dense potting soil.

Really appreciate the recommendation — and those photos are 🔥

Thanks so much, Jen — this is exactly what we designed Rainbows & Unicorns for.

Seeing strong root growth and healthy leaf development after switching to a chunky aroid potting mix is the goal. That balance of aeration and moisture retention is what helps aroids like Kaempferia establish faster and grow more consistently.

Clear nursery pots + a breathable mix is one of the best combinations for monitoring root health, so you’re set up perfectly.

Really appreciate you trusting the mix with your collection — that means a lot.
